Entrepreneurial Leadership in Africa and Beyond: Learning Globally to Lead Locally

A Unique New Hybrid Course in Entrepreneurial Leadership

African Leadership Academy (ALA) and Global Online Academy (GOA) are pleased to announce a unique offering for the summer and fall of 2018. Entrepreneurial Leadership combines a rich immersion experience on ALA’s residential campus in Johannesburg, South Africa followed by a 15 week online component that extends the foundational skills gained during the residential program to real-world concerns within each student’s local community. Students in this course will engage directly with ALA’s entrepreneurial leadership model alongside master educators and alumni committed to empowering this social impact on the African continent and beyond. This experience is open exclusively to rising seniors and juniors (anticipated graduation 2019 or 2020) from [GOA member schools].


The Course

Comprising both residential and online components, this course seeks to introduce and develop the mindset, approach, and skills that support globally minded and transformative entrepreneurial leadership. Successful completion of both residential and online components of the course are required to receive course credit.

Residential Experience

July 1-18, 2018

During the residential component of the course, students will learn the fundamentals of ALA’s leadership learning model to unlock their potential as agents of positive change. The curriculum will focus first on self-leadership, uncovering self-awareness, confidence, and strong communication skills as essential ingredients for effective, ethical leadership. Student-centered, experiential activities will emphasize collaborative teamwork skills, highlighting different aspects of leadership such as listening, non-verbal communication, empathy, and creative thinking. With these core experiences in place, students will then be guided in ALA’s design thinking approach to entrepreneurial leadership (B.U.I.L.D.) to explore their passions, interests, skills, and purpose. Skills of empathy, feedback, and proactivity will each be honed while developing the tools necessary for effective needs identification. Through uniquely crafted service learning experiences and site visits across Johannesburg, students will further engage with South African entrepreneurs and organizations, developing collaborative teamwork skills that will support learning through both the residential and online course components.

Students will also explore the amazing historical, cultural, and ecological sites that South Africa has to offer alongside students from across Africa and the world who are participating in ALA’s concurrent summer programs. Whether it's belaying in the Magaliesburg Mountains, visiting Nelson Mandela's house in Soweto, or searching for zebras and lions in the bush, there are many excursions that allow students to venture outside of ALA's campus. These trips are spaced out over the course of the program to ensure that students have a balance of on-campus activities and off-campus exploration.

Students will form strong working relationships and bond as a leadership cohort, departing ALA with a deeper understanding of themselves, improved teamwork and communication skills, and tools to identify problems and find innovative solutions - all set within an immersive and rich South African learning experience.







Online Engagement

September 5-December 21, 2018

Following the residential program, the course moves online, where students will extend their learning to an initiative within their local context through an Original Idea for Development (OID) project. Leveraging asynchronous independent learning activities that are closely supported by collaborative cohort feedback and instructor coaching, the OID unit teaches students the process for ideating, incubating, and birthing entrepreneurial ideas. Students will use the BUILD model to individually identify a real need in their own communities and produce an original solution for it. Weekly activities supporting the OID project will expose students to fundamental entrepreneurial processes and skills such as market research, competitive analysis, business model generation, measuring impact, managing projects, prototyping and piloting. At the end of that process, students communicate their idea by writing a compelling Executive Summary and will be encouraged to pilot their idea with the support of their course cohort, thus providing a meaningful and authentic opportunity to practice their leadership. Designed in the Global Online Academy model of highly interactive, rigorous online coursework, this semester-long phase of the course will require a commitment from students similar to that of a course at their home schools (five to seven hours per week).

Successful completion of the entire course (both residential and online components) will earn two semesters of course credit from ALA.

Location, Application, Cost, and Further information

  • The three-week residential component of this course takes place on ALA’s secure campus nestled in the leafy suburb of Honeydew on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The campus is centered around a quad surrounded by buildings that include a state-of-the-art learning commons, auditorium, dining hall and newly renovated residential halls. There are also basketball courts, full-size and 5-on-5 football/soccer pitches, tennis courts and a running trail making providing access to fitness and recreational activities.
  • Applications for registration will be accepted from students attending GOA member schools beginning January 8, 2018. Students may register for the course APPLY NOW link below and will be selected for participation based upon academic preparedness and a short statement of motivation.
  • Tuition, room, board and program cost of the course is US$4,350 plus the standard GOA enrollment fee for member schools. Applicants should speak with their GOA School site director to learn more about this fee. Students are additionally responsible for round-trip travel and travel-related costs associated with the residential program in Johannesburg, South Africa.
