THIS PRIVACY POLICY (“POLICY”) GOVERNS THE INFORMATION THAT THE AFRICAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (“ALA,” “we” OR “us”) COLLECTS THROUGH THIS GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM WEBSITE (“Website” OR “WEBSITE”) AND YOUR RELATED COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE WITH ALA CONCERNING GSP SERVICES. YOUR USE OF THE WEBSITE AND THE GSP SERVICES IS THEREFORE SUBJECT TO THE AGREEMENT. BY USING THIS WEBSITE, YOU SIGNIFY YOUR ASSENT TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH ANY TERM IN THIS POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE OR SUBMIT ANY PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION THROUGH THIS WEBSITE.

  1. Personal Information Collected. We collect information that can be used to identify you personally (“personal information”), such as your name, email address and telephone number. The primary purpose in collecting applicants personal information is to enable us to receive and assess applications for GSP services and to maintain communication with our GSP delegates (registrants) and their families. We also collect and use your information to send you information about GSP current activities, to keep you informed about future events, for Website administration, to improve our services and future services, and for the purpose of performing any other specific services for which such data was collected. We also use your personal information for marketing, promotional, and other commercial or non-commercial communications. For these purposes ALA may share applicants’ and/or registrants’ personal information with other persons such as employees, speakers, volunteers, service providers (including medical practitioners) and donors. ALA does not permit these parties to use such information for any other purpose than to perform the services that ALA has instructed them to provide. In some instances, ALA may also collect sensitive information about applicants or registrants, such as information about their membership to a professional or trade association or trade union, their health (including disability), their racial or ethnic origin, or any criminal record. Consent is obtained for the collection of such information. There may be occasions when ALA obtains personal information from a third party, for example through nominations. In this case nominated applicants will be informed of the privacy policy and the collection and use of their personal information by ALA.

Accordingly, please note that information we collect may be transferred to and processed to countries outside of your country. By using our Website and submitting your Information, you specifically consent to the transfer and processing of your information outside of your country, which may not have data protection laws that provide the same level of protection that exists in your country. Your consent is voluntary. If, you do not consent, then we may not, however be able to provide you with our GSP services.

Compliance with Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)(For US registrants): You represent and warrant that, in compliance with COPPA, you are over thirteen (13) years of age, alternatively that if you are registering a child under fourteen (14) years of age you are the parent or guardian of such child. You hereby consent to the collection of such child’s personal information necessary to process and complete the Camp registration. Please email ALA if you object to the GSP service applicant or registrant’s image in any photograph, videotape, or other audio-visual recording taken during a camp or any other record of the event for publicity, advertising or any other purpose related to GSP or ALA services.
  2. Changes or Modifications to Privacy Policy: We reserve the right to change, add, subtract, update or amend all or any part of this Policy at any time without notice to you. We will post any Policy changes on the Website. Each version of this Policy will be identified at the top of the page by its effective date.
  3. Privacy Complaints or Queries: You may contact us using the form at www.alasummer.org with any questions, complaints, or claims.
  4. Accessing or Changing Personal Information: ALA attempts to ensure that all personal information collected and stored in its files and database systems is correct and accurate. ALA will endeavour to meet or advise of the outcome of such a request within seven business days of receipt. Unless personal information is required for administrative or legal reasons ALA will take all reasonable steps to meet such requests at the earliest possible opportunity.
