Campus & Facilities

Global Scholars Program takes place on African Leadership Academy's campus, which is located on the outskirts of metropolitan Johannesburg in the quiet and leafy suburb of Honeydew. Here, participants can enjoy peace and quiet, play on green sports fields, hang out under trees, sleep soundly, and wake to the sound of birds.

A short, 30-minute drive away, through bustling commercial districts and beautiful residential areas, lies the magic and dynamism of Johannesburg, known by locals as “Joburg” or “Jozi.” Offering both proximity to the rich history of the city and the tranquility of the suburbs, our campus creates the perfect environment for fun, focus and learning.

Our Campus

Our campus is centered around a grassy, circular quad and surrounded by modern buildings, including an administration block, dining hall, a state-of-the-art learning commons, auditorium, and residence halls. Additionally, there are basketball courts, a full-size and 5-on-5 football/soccer pitch, tennis courts and a running trail, making it easy for participants to enjoy their favorite activities while on campus. Campus wide WiFi is also available to help you stay connected to family back home.

The Residences

Our modern  residential facilities are sure to make for a great stay at GSP! Dorm rooms are fitted with comfortable single beds and shared between two people.

The rooms also have a desk and closet for each participant, and heater for cold nights. Residence halls house an average of 23 students, and provide a secure and homey environment for participants, including common spaces for hanging out and kitchenettes. Restroom facilities on each hall are shared, single-gender and include hot/cold showers.

Two to three staff members live on each hall and are available day and night to provide support to participants.

The Dining Hall

An easy walking distance from the dorms is the dining hall that celebrates the ALA value of diversity through a display of flags from around the world.

Our on-campus kitchen staff and catering service provide healthy meals along with snacks throughout the day and are able to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and halal-friendly meals.

Classrooms & Learning Spaces

All of our learning spaces are equipped with 21st Century learning tools such as white boards and projectors. Additionally, the Pardee Learning Commons, opened in September 2017, is a state of the art building providing a light-filled, multidisciplinary space for students to work and learn.

Participants can gather in meeting rooms or classrooms for instruction, and enjoy many different spaces for breakout work, quiet reflection, or hanging out with new friends! For experiential learning, our open space quad at the center of campus is ideal for activities, group reflection and down time.
