Explore Africa

Explore Africa is a week-and-a-half long (10 day)  leadership and service learning program for students ages 13 - 19.

A shorter version of our Engage Africa offering, at GSP Explore, participants take part in service learning projects, strengthen self-awareness, and practice leadership and teamwork skills, preparing them to create positive change in Africa and around the world.

The Explore program helps young leaders unlock their potential as agents of positive change. Curriculum focuses first on self leadership, as we believe that self awareness, confidence, and strong communication skills are essential for effective, ethical leadership.

"The educators were amazing. Always active. Always ready to help us. They were really helpful and challenged us when we were getting too comfortable in our idea, despite it having flaws."

Connect with the community

Take part in service learning through a local social enterprise that integrates wildlife conservation and tourism with community-based social services, youth leadership and early childhood education.

We play with little kids, chat with elders, learn local dances and have a South African lunch. We also get our our hands dirty making bricks, painting schools or tending gardens. This collaboration with the local community takes service learning to the next level.

Discover South Africa's history

Travel to a neighboring suburb to visit Liliesleaf Farm. This historic site was a both a hub and a refuge for activists and freedom fighters during South Africa’s anti-apartheid liberation movement. Today the site is one of South Africa’s foremost, award-winning heritage sites, where the journey to democracy in South Africa is honored and the many lives that changed South Africa’s political landscape are commemorated. Liliesleaf is just one of the many excursions participants can expect during their session!

Participants are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zone to further develop their teamwork and group participation skills. At the beginning of each session, facilitators take dedicated time to foster group cohesion and engage participants with fun and challenging team building activities.

The program creates well-rounded leaders who can collaborate with peers from around the world and take initiative to inspire meaningful change in their communities.
