EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
At GSP, we go beyond community service by supporting students to develop meaningful relationships with local entrepreneurs and NGO leaders. Participants learn skills and develop mindsets that foster long term engagement.
In Engage Africa (18-day) sessions campers work in teams to assist local entrepreneurs in strengthening their ventures. Whether it's a neighborhood restaurant, a South African fashion line, or an after-school program for at-risk youth, teams learn about the business and develop an understanding of the owner's needs. Using our BUILD design-thinking model, participants brainstorm solutions and collaborate with entrepreneurs to finalize a business proposal. They are no longer just volunteering time and service, but rather co-creating long-term solutions that address true needs rather than the volunteer’s perception.
During Explore Africa (10-day) sessions*, campers engage in service learning through a local social enterprise that integrates wildlife conservation and tourism with community-based social services, youth leadership and early childhood education. We play with little kids, chat with elders, learn local dances and have a South African lunch. We also get our our hands dirty making bricks, painting schools or tending gardens. Before the day ends, we take a game drive and try to see the Big Five!
These service learning journeys make a difference in the lives of both campers and our community partners.
